In physics, what is the difference between a closed system and an isolated system?

    Closed and isolated systems refer to the law of conservation of energy. It argues, in the words of Lavoisier, that

    "Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed!"

    The different types of systems depend on their relationship to the substance and the energy they contain.

    A closed system is physically closed; the matter it contains cannot come out of it, but the energy can escape from it. A refrigerator is a closed system because it retains its material, but it emits heat.

    An isolated system conserves both matter and energy. It does not exchange energy with the environment. A coffee thermos is an isolated system since its properties conserve the thermal energy of the liquid it contains.
