Question de l’élève

Secondaire 2 • 1a

Hello,

image.png

In this definition (from Grammarly), they explain that an indirect object receives the action from the direct object.

However, I want to write a sentence like this:

"The girl broke the vase, so she apologized to her mother."

In this sentence, I believe 'her mother' is an indirect object, but it doesn't receive any action from a direct object...

Does that mean there are exceptions to this definition because of whether a verb is directly transitive or indirectly transitive?

Then, how should I define the indirect object?

Thank you so much!

The_Elf.

    Hi!

Thank you for your question. I don't think your sentence is a exception. «her mother» does receive, in way, an action : she is getting apologized to. The action she is receiving is «apologizing». So the mother, in your sentence, is the indirect object. :)

If you have another question, don't hesitate to ask. We'll be hppy to help! :D

    Laurie :)
