    Thanks for your question!

    This is simply a matter of units. Energy (E) is measured in Joules (J), which is the same as kg m^2 s^-2. Mass (m) is measured in kg.

    m^2 s^-2 is the same as m^2/s^2, which is m/s squared (the squared speed, thus the c^2 instead of simply c).

    Therefore: E = mc^2 -> kg m^2 s^-2 = kg m^2 s^-2. The units are all the same each side of the equation.
