Student Question

Secondary IV • 2yr.

Hello, I’ve been struggling with how to find the rule of a step function when given a graph, how do I identify parameter “b” while using the rule y=a[b(x-h)]+k. I am a secondary four student. Thank you.

    Hello there !

When dealing with a step or staircase function, in order to find b, use | 1 / segment length | . The segment is easily calculated by looking at the graph, and taking its first and last point. Then, add the sign if b is positive or negative, which depends if the dots are closed-opened or vice versa.
