Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that studies the properties of numbers as well as the rules of calculating numbers. It includes, amongst other things, the standard operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Historically speaking, arithmetic is one of the oldest branches of mathematics. It traces its origins to the time of the Egyptian and Babylonian civilizations. In 6th century BC, arithmetic was one of the four mathematical sciences taught in the Pythagorean school.
